D, E, F Show Jumping at Forseya Club 18th, 19th 20th November 2010

One of my favorite places to jump is at the Forseya Club. Set in the middle of Cairo it lies below one of the main bridges and sits almost beneath the famous Cairo Tower. On numerous occasions I can glance up at either the bridge or the tower and see people watching the competition from above. The competition area has recently been converted from grass to a fiber surface and it really does look smart. This weekend we had riders in each of the classes which meant that Mohamed Khalifa and myself were there for 12 hours at a time, being anxious all day about our riders and what they would achieve.

First of all Mohamed Khalifa competed with three horses; Niagara, Dama and Banderas. If any of you read the last newsletter then you would be enlightened about Niagara’s story, something that happened that was not a coincidence and was definitely meant to be. Throughout the weekend Mohamed handled Niagara’s ups and downs, along with her jumping extremely well at some points and then throwing herself over the fence in others. She is still a baby but she put herself in a very good light this weekend, clearing the enormous fences that were in the course and being brave over the very frightening ones.
Overall Mohamed was extremely pleased with the way that Niagara jumped this weekend. Dama also jumped well resulting in clears and fantastic jumps. Mohamed and Dama had one stop on the last day on the second part of a one strided double. Banderas was again a superstar this weekend pulling in a crowd whenever he entered the area. His bouncy sitting stride giving him the most enormous power that Mohamed does so well to keep under control. The weekend resulted in a clear and a pole down on the other two days, but overall excellent riding for an excellent horse.

Well done Mohamed, we can only try to understand how tough it is for you to ride three horses and look after the rest of us at the competition, coping with ups and downs, pressures and victories. All of us – and I mean all of us, could not be who we are today without your support, sound judgment and belief in all of us.

Jassin did exceptionally well this weekend and once again improved in leaps and bounds. On day one he did a usual panic of forgetting the course just before entering the arena but of course once in, it all came flooding back. One of Jassins courses lead to a pole down and the last day lead to a refusal but Yessein completed the whole course on all the days and rode with a real determination. To ride positively in your course is extremely important, just an attitude of being positive or negative can really separate the good riders from the bad. Jassin is grasping this notion bit by bit, gaining the confidence that he needs from Mohamed Khalifa. I would like to add that Jassin also cantered his courses and after each fence he calmed his horse, turned properly, put his horse in the middle and then was able to jump. He did his homework properly and this is why he had such a successful weekend.

I rode Redley this weekend in the E Class and was told that I rode a lot better than in Alexandria.  Redley is not an easy horse to ride as once she sees the fence she tends to run and pull. A certain understanding and of course hold and release, hold and release is needed to calm her and thus see a good stride to the fence. On the first day I went clear, the 2nd day I had one pole down and on the last day which consisted of 14 fences and not a nice course, I went clear and was placed 1st.

I would like to say a huge thank you to Mohamed for giving me the opportunity and the ability to ride well and compete. While jumping at home you were always patient and forgiving, at times I know I made you extremely angry by not concentrating and not doing as well as I could have done – I am sure some riders can empathies with me on this. You were patient and never ceased to give up when I made an error, even if it took some hours to alter and correct. You enabled me to achieve my goal and you never gave up on me, my 1st place is for you.

C Class Show Jumping Forseya Club 25th, 26th, 27th November 2010

The following weekend we were again at the Forseya Club. Competitions seem to be coming thick and fast and now I think that we have horses competing almost every weekend.

Mohamed Khalifa competed with Carletto and Valiska this weekend and Nadine competed with her horse Beatrice.  The courses were designed by a course designer called Michelle who fly’s in from France to build them.  As always he designed three tough courses and on the last day he really included all the tricks of the trade. On the first day Mohamed jumped Valiska superbly and had a clear. Valiksa is a difficult horse to ride; all that power charging to the fence and Mohamed really has to control the fight to see a good stride in good time. Valiska also has a problem with one strided doubles or one strided triple combinations as she feels she cannot reach and puts in a dirty stop. However we worked her hard before the competition to pass this problem and it seems that we succeeded. The 2nd day again Mohamed and Valiska had again one pole down but on the last day they cleared the tricky course.  The tricky course included a difficult broken line going to an enormous oxer and then to double of a triple bar and wall, all on an angle.

Carletto also did exceptionally well this weekend, gaining back his confidence and showing his real worth on the last day. On the first day Mohamed and Carletto had two poles down and a refusal, then progressing to having one pole down on the 2nd day and then a magnificent clear on the third day. Mohamed showed that Carletto is an amazing horse and surely his limit is the sky!

Nadine had her 3rd competition on Beatrice this weekend and proved to everyone what a good rider she is. On the first day she took two poles, the 2nd day one pole and on the last day, to match her father’s excellent results and good riding she also went clear. Slowly but surely Nadine is understanding her horse and riding like a professional.  Not only my opinion but an opinion of the President of the Federation Engineer Hesham Khattab and also Mr. Kareem Hamdy our international rider and trainer of the military team.

For My Riders

First of all I think now it is time to go out of my silence and write something for my riders.  I would like to thank all of you for your spirit and your will to do your best, this was certainly obvious for me in the last competition. Kate you rode very well; you progressed a lot and really achieved the goal. You controlled your nerves and worked hard on your mental fitness and you proved to me that my beliefs in you and your riding was not wrong. Achieving the 1st place last competition with such good riding was really a prize of the hard work that you did. So thank you again for the result that you achieved and your good riding. I wish for you all the successes in your career and in your life.

Nadine, my big, tiny rider - yes big in riding and tiny in size. You are proving to everybody how talented you are and we all know what a big star you will be in the future. You proved the equation that hard work and a love between horse and rider equals big success. You proved it with Crepp Suzzette and now you are assuring it with Beatrice. I am really proud of you and I am sure that all of the centers riders are proud of you and your results. Keep going and touch the sky.

Jassin you have come a long way from beginning your jumping career six months ago, to now competing with good results in the competitions. The road has not been easy and nor will it be easy but you are strong enough to rise to the challenge and win the battle.  Your passion for horses and the sport has shone through, dedicating your time to riding and to spending your time with us in the summer holidays. Keep your spirit up and you will achieve great things.
