SUMMER SEASON @ KINGS RANCH

Week Commencing 9th- 11th July

By the second week we would all like to believe that the horses and riders had settled into a routine and were now relaxed about competing and going into the ring. However this week was not to go by without any surprises.

We decided to put Niagara into the 1.10 this week. 1.10m from 90cm is a huge jump, literally, not only in the technicalities of the course but the height of the jumps and of course the width of the oxers. However there is no other option and so it seems that you just have to go for it!

So Mohamed Khalifa rode Niagara and surprised us all with only having two poles down. This was not due to knocking the fences with her hind legs and being clumsy but purely getting her legs in the wrong order and throwing herself over the fence. She is just a baby and this was such a good result. The second day was the same result with two poles down and the last day she did a fantastic round, thought about what she was doing, and did a clear.

Mariam Shesh started the week with a fantastic clear. The second day they also did a clear and went on into the jump off to have a refusal at the first fenc e. On the last day they also were on the way to a nice clear round but just knocked the last fence and so finished with four faults.

Mohamed Ayman and Cooper improved throughout the week with having four down on the first day, three down on the second down and two down on the last day.

Nadim El Masry and Birthday Boy had an obscure week with having one down on the first day and then being eliminated on the second day. One the last day they also had once down.

Kate Wakefield and Wild Fire continued to have more control during the week with a good course on the first and last day and a not so good course on the second day. They had one pole down on each day.

Mohamed Khalifa rode Jula in the 1.10m class to get her back into the competition after her stiff neck and ended with a nice and calm clear. The second day Mohamed rode her in the 1.20 and just clipped the last fence to end with four faults. On the last day Mohamed Aymen rode Jula in the 1.10m and has one refusal and one pole down.

Mohamed Khalifa also rode Darma in the 1.10m and did not follow on their good work from last week. On the first day they had one refusal, the second day they knocked the first fence and so had one pole down and on the last day they were eliminated. Not a good note to finish on but of course if we don’t make mistakes we don’t make anything.

And last but not least Mohamed Khalifa rode Valiska in the 1.20 for two days, having one pole down on the first day and doing a most memorable clear on the second day. On the last day they had one pole down.

One of the highlights of everyone’s day is the meeting at the end where we all get together and discuss our trainer Mohamed Khalifa’s riding and position, this proves to be very popular and sends smiles all around!  After this we continue on a more serious note and offer two positive and one negative points on everyone’s round and what they can do to improve themselves and their horses. One thing that has enabled us to do this is the very kind filming done by Mariam Shesh’s father. Khaled Shesh has religiously bought his camera in every day of the competition and filmed every one of our rounds so we can look back on it and see our mistakes and of course the good things we did on the course.

For this week we discussed that to continue Mariam’s good rounds, she needs to get a good pace going inside the ring and to keep it.  Also coming into the fence, especially doubles, at a slight angle would enable her to jump the fence straight. Nadim needs to keep a good pace but hold at the same time. He has a tendency in front of the fence to get a longer and longer stride and at the end Birthday Boy decides he cannot jump. This proved to be good advice on the Saturday, the last day of the week where although he had one down, he continually held Birthday Boy and jumped every fence in a good stride. We noted that Mohamed Aymen needed to get a good pace in the ring and keep it. Keeping impulsion between him and Cooper seems to be the main issue in having poles down. However Mohamed Aymen’s positive attitude throughout the competition so far has reflected on all the team members and will continually be vital to the team’s success. Kate Wakefield was noted to be somewhat negative about all of her rounds but was assured that her partnership with Wild Fire was getting better as they were learning to trust each other more and more. Mohamed Khalifa enjoyed the comments made about him and the horses he was riding. The whole team was very impressed with Niagara’s progression and also Darma’s jumping. It was noticed though that Darma needs more warming up before the class.

As you can see our discussion at the end of every day helps each one of us see the good things we did that day and the aspects that we need to improve on. It is also interesting to see other points of view and points being raised that you might never have thought of!
