4th, 5th, 6th November Show Jumping D and E Class Alexandria

Our competition in Alexandria started with the most glorious weather; a cool breeze, a warm sun and plenty of shade. This year the Egyptian Federation has raised the height of the fences in all classes 5cm. This means that the D Class that was 1.10m to 1.15m is now 1.15m to 1.20m and the E that was 90cm – 1m is now 95cm – 1.05m. This has completely raised the competition this year as the courses are bigger, wider and altogether just that little bit more challenging.

D Class

In the D Class, Mr. Mohamed Khalifa competed with Banderas and Niagara, Dr. Mohamed Aymen with Carletto and Mariam Shash with Shadow.

The first day saw excellent results; Khalifa rode Banderas first and did a fantastic clear. This was the first time for Banderas in the D Class as he competed in the E Class last year. The height did not prove to be at all problematic for and their round was a real pleasure to watch. The second day Khalifa and Banderas also did a superb clear, astonishing the audience with his strong jump, clearing each fence with a foot to spare.  Banderas jumped so well that Khalifa decided not to compete with him on the last day, so as to end on an excellent note.

Khalifa also competed with Niagara. Now Niagara has a special story. Last year she was kept at our stables but owned by someone else. Khalifa competed with her all last year (which was her first season) in the D Class and was very successful. Towards the end of last year she was taken away and rumors were told that she did not jump. She did not jump gates or spooky fences and just simply that she was not good. As if by fate she was returned to us in August of this year, with a bad reputation and known as a non-horse. From this point on we put her into training and this competition in Alexandri  was her first of the season. On the first day she did a great clear, jumping big over the fences and showing a lot of scope - even the gates proved to be no problem at all. On the second day Khalifa and Niagara took one pole down. After being away from training for so long and all of the bad rumors that were spread,  Khalifa really showed that  these rumors were not true and proved how Niagara is a good horse and what promise she has for the future.

Dr. Mohamed Aymen rode his new ride Carletto in the competition. Carletto is a horse with a huge amount of power and talent but maybe his mind is not so pure. He tends to look at fences and unless the rider really rides to the fence, holding him by leg and by hands, he will usually try to find a way out. On the first day Rakawy jumped well however being soft with his hands is something that he needs to work on. To be able to release on top of the fence will always save a pole. Good luck Rakawy in the future, let your horse sit, be light with your hands and you can do anything.

Mariam Shash competed with her horse Shadow and on the first day resulted in just one pole down. The course was pleasant and easy going which always gives the riders confidence for the following days. On the second day they had two poles down which again was a good result as the course was higher and also longer. On the last day they encountered problems as Mariam’s pace was not good and her holding in front of the fence was also non apparent. For a horse to jump a good pace must be sought, keeping in mind that the last three strides are his and having a good and soft contact on his mouth in front of the fence.  Decide what you want Mariam and do it; nothing can be done in life half heartedly.

E Class

In the E Class I competed with Redley who also competed last year. On the first day she jumped very well and was clear however I know that I was far too fast and some control was needed for the second and third days. The next day I was more controlled however too much interference in front of the fence cost me one pole down. On the last day which was the best day for my riding and Redley’s jumping, I had one pole down. I was controlled in the course and tried to leave the last three strides to the horse, definitely the best day.

F Class

In the F Class we have a new competitor, Jassin Essam. Jassin started jumping 8 months ago and has been riding a horse called Sun Dance. Sun Dance is a great jumper however to ride him you must always be sitting behind him with a contact. Once you sit on his shoulders he will try to escape so he really does need concentration!  On the first day Jassin’s original plan was to jump the course trotting. Unfortunately competition nerves got the better of him and so he started his course in canter. This meant that between some of the fences there was a lack of control and also a lack of sitting in the saddle. On the second day Jassin greatly improved his riding and positive thinking and by the third day he rode a very nice clear round with just a few time faults. Well done Jassin it was great to see you improve such a great deal throughout the weekend, you must just relax, be calm and know that whatever you believe, will be true.

So for the first competition this year the D, E and F Classes were half a success and half a very tough learning experience. You all know what you need to do, find the will, clear your mind and be a rider!
